Job Description:

LEAD MATERIALS ENGINEER (MATERIALS LAB)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Run a characterization laboratory supporting SpaceX engineering needs across all products * Direct and review material evaluations using metallographic, thermal analytical, and spectroscopic techniques * Manage technicians supporting materials laboratory functions * Mentor and train technicians to better support or expand laboratory capabilities * Track and communicate status of laboratory projects to design, production, and materials engineers * Maintain calibration of equipment and perform or coordinate repairs if necessary * Evaluate state of the industry techniques and equipment for future lab capabilities

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

* Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline * 2+ years of experience working in a materials laboratory * Experience managing technicians or workflow for a laboratory

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

* Experience performing SEM, EDS, and other electron spectroscopy methods to evaluate of aerospace materials * Experience performing DSC, DMA, TGA, and other thermal analytical methods to evaluate of aerospace materials * Understanding of metallography, mechanical testing, heat treatment, machining, and sample processing * Experience carrying out technical tasks in direct support of aerospace engineering decision making * Experience working with multiple aerospace material systems in a laboratory or processing setting: metals, composites, polymers, and ceramics * Ability to train technicians on scientific equipment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Working with chemicals including acids
