Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.MANUFACTURING ENGINEER (DRAGON THERMAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS)Dragon currently delivers cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. Future missions will ultimately seek to extend humanity's reach far beyond the earth and moon. Bringing a fresh perspective to engineering problem solving, looking to accelerate hardware production, increase the quality of high performance spaceflight hardware and meet Dragon's time sensitive project completion.RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for end-to-end ownership for new and existing thermal protection system (TPS) hardware for the Dragon spacecraftDevelop, qualify, and refine manufacturing processes to meet all design and business requirements including safety, quality, efficiency and on-time deliveryCollaborate with other engineers, subject matter experts, and technicians to solve large-scale production challengesWork with design engineers to evaluate designs for manufacturability and implementation in a rapidly evolving production environmentResolve product non-conformances and collaborate with the quality team to implement root cause corrective actions to prevent recurring issuesIdentify, plan, and execute capital equipment, machine, and layout upgrades to meet volume production demandDevelop and refine floor layouts, capacity models, and product flow analysis to ensure on-time vehicle delivery to manifestOversee composite hardware through production: lamination, machining, acceptance testing, and final assembly (bonded and bolted assemblies)Work directly with technicians on the shop floor as required to ensure successful implementation of manufacturing processes and to solicit feedback for improvementsCoordinate with supply chain and manufacturing planning teams to ensure there is a clear path to success on every manufacturing buildBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, chemical or materials engineering2+ years of professional industry experience (automotive, aviation or spacecraft manufacturing) working with composite structures and/or thermal protection systems1+ years of demonstrated hands-on experience in a manufacturing setting from industry, hobby, or through participation in collegiate engineering projects such as Formula SAE, Baja SAE, rocket club, CubeSat or Design Build FlyPREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Master's degree in, materials, chemical or aerospace engineering1+ years of experience with advanced high temperature composites manufacturing systems and processesFamiliarity with non-destructive evaluation techniques and interpretation of results (XRay, CT, etc.)Experience writing work instructions and procedures for critical aerospace hardwareValidation testing experience for composite structuresExperience transitioning complex products from R to rate manufacturing in a fast-paced environmentExperience with adhesive bonding, qualification, and validationExperience with coatings and/or paintsExperience working with cross-functional teams and employees at all levels of an organization to achieve final deliverablesADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Position may require extended work hours and weekend workPosition may require standing, bending and working directly with hardware on the floor for extended periods of timeITAR REQUIREMENTS:To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
