RADAR ENGINEER (STARSHIP)The Starship RF and Flight Safety Systems Team develops the communications systems, radionavigation systems, and flight safety systems for the Starship vehicle. We perform system synthesis, component level radio and antenna design, system integration validation, and system level validation for the RF systems on Starship and Super Heavy. The Sr. Radar Engineer role is responsible for developing, modeling, and implementing the radar systems needed for SpaceX's next generation of launch vehicles flying to Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars. RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop the system architecture, signal processing and algorithms for cutting edge radar systems used for space vehicle navigationDevelop link budgets and cascades for analyzing performance expectations for radar systems under developmentProvide expertise in analysis and verification of the overall radar system design to meet performanceDrive the radar design process starting with high-level conceptual and architectural discussions through model development, implementation, and performance validationEvaluate radar system performance using first principles and statistical signal processing fundamentalsBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or mathematics6+ years of professional experience in designing and implementing RF communication, radio navigation, or radar systemsPREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Master's degree or PhD in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, physics, or mathematics10+ years of experience in design, analysis, and verification of radar systemsDemonstrated experience in applying the fundamentals of detection and estimation theory to radar applicationsDemonstrated experience in design, analysis, and implementation of signal processing for radar systemsDemonstrated experience implementing radar system models and deriving meaningful system level performance data from those modelsAbility to derive fundamental radar performance relationships from first principlesAdvanced knowledge and experience in application of statistical signal processingStrong understanding of radar system design, signal processing, detection algorithms and hardware architectureStrong command of electromagnetic scattering from manmade objects and terrainFamiliarity with microwave antenna fundamental principlesFamiliarity with active and passive RF hardware designExcellent communication and documentation skills and ability to collaborate with other engineering disciplinesADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestonesITAR REQUIREMENTS:To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
