Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER (STARSHIP COMPONENTS)The propulsion components team develops the most advanced spacecraft and launch vehicle components in the world. Our engineers serve as hardware experts for the flow control devices and mechanisms that drive the critical capabilities on Starship - from engine throttling to attitude control. We design and build valves, regulators, and actuators for maximum reliability in extreme environments, with temperatures ranging from +900F to -400F and pressures beyond 10,000 psig. Starship components are designed to be simultaneously mass-producible, cheap, and reliable.Mechanical design engineers on Starship need to be agile and flexible to ever-changing requirements in an R&D environment. They take full ownership over their hardware: using their expertise to inform system-level decisions, gathering their own requirements, working with the manufacturing and supply chain teams on manufacturability, performing hands-on testing to inform development, and urgently troubleshooting issues at test/launch sites.RESPONSIBILITIES:On-time delivery of functional components for integration onto the vehicleCollaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on component and system architecture decisionsDefine requirements and design components to meet them, in a way that sets the program on a long-term path to successAnalyze and clearly communicate marginsGenerate detailed drawings and coordinate manufacturing with the production and supply chain teamsAssemble and test development articles, inclusive of flight-representative sequences and environmentsSupport, troubleshoot and document component anomalies that arise at the build, test, or launch sitesBASIC QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline or physics1+ years of experience designing and analyzing mechanical systems via professional work experience, project/research-based student experience, or a combination of bothPREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for problem solving, and desire to optimize modern rocket production and launch processesExperience designing, building, testing and troubleshooting mechanical systemsUnderstanding of fundamental principals in fluid systems and solid mechanicsStrong project management skills and effective communication of technical concepts across multi-disciplinary teamsHands-on experience with fluid and/or gas handling systemsLeadership experience on a project or research teamExperience using test instrumentation and control components (e.g. pressure transducers, thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors, relays, solenoid valves, etc.)Knowledge of electro-mechanical devices, actuators, motors, valves, regulators, or other fluid control devicesADDITIONALREQUIREMENTS:Travel to other SpaceX sites as neededAble to work flexible hours and occasional weekend support as neededITARREQUIREMENTS:To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
